Artist Talk

April 25, 7PM

at Ivester Contemporary

Join us for an in-person discussion with artist Charlie Hyman and Director Kevin Ivester as they explore Hyman’s current Project Space exhibition, Flat Earth, on view through May 16.

Charlie Hyman's Flat Earth brings together a group of hand-built ceramic vessels covered in energetic, humorous drawings. Across their surfaces, naïve characters set out on ill-fated journeys through imagined worlds shaped by labor, hierarchy, ritual, and conspiracy. These systems promise meaning, identity, and belonging, yet ultimately fall short. The drawings unfold like maps, tracing each character’s decisions and their consequences across the surface of the vessel.

Rather than following a single narrative, the works build layered, interconnected stories that reward close looking. As these journeys repeat, the pursuit of something greater begins to feel cyclical, often ending in disillusionment.

Hyman pairs these chaotic, cartoon-like scenes with classical ceramic forms. As the surface curves, the imagery shifts in scale and perspective, moving from expansive, city-like views to intimate details. Viewers encounter multiple moments at once, piecing together narratives as they move around each object.
